Water the garden properly: tips on how to provide the plants with enough water in the heat
Watering early in the morning:
The
most hobby gardeners reach for the watering can in the evening, when the sun's rays are no longer burning down quite so strongly from the sky.
In fact, the morning is the ideal time to water your garden.
On the one hand, because the earth is then still relatively cool and the ambient temperature is still mild - so
hardly any water evaporates
.
On the other hand, the earth is still a little damp from the morning dew.
In this way, the soil absorbs water better and passes it on to the plants.
In addition, lettuce, petunias & co. do not suffer from a cold shock if the watering water is too cool.
Anyone who is struggling with a plague of
snails
in the vegetable patch should also water in the morning.
This allows the soil to dry again by evening, when most snails attack the tender plants.
Chop and mulch regularly:
In addition to vigorous watering, chopping and mulching also helps ensure that the plants have enough water in the summer.
So-called capillaries form over time on untreated soil – these are small longitudinal tubes through which the water rises to the surface and evaporates there.
Vegetables and flowers then only see a small part of the cool water - and that can quickly mean the end if the heat is prolonged.
Hoeing destroys these capillaries on the surface and the water remains in the soil.
It also eliminates unwanted weeds that draw additional water from your plants.
Avoid leaves when watering:
You should definitely avoid the leaves of the plant when watering, because moisture promotes fungal infestation and other leaf diseases such as the dreaded powdery mildew.
Tomatoes and zucchini are particularly at risk.
Rather water only the root ball and the surrounding soil.
Then nothing stands in the way of a rich harvest and a magnificently blooming garden.
During summer heat records, it is important to water the plants sufficiently.
