An 83-year-old accidentally rolled his car into the Main in Bavaria on Sunday.
The car then drove about 150 meters in the river and fortunately got stuck on a stone, the police in Lower Franconia said.
At the point near Karlstadt (Main-Spessart district), two eyewitnesses jumped into the river and rushed to help the driver: while the woman is said to have opened the driver's door, the man rescued the driver from his vehicle.
The couple managed to bring the 83-year-old to shore unharmed.
Car recovered with the help of divers
According to the police, his car had completely disappeared in the meantime.
Divers from the fire department then secured the vehicle so that it could be taken out of the Main.
Shipping was stopped for a short time.
According to initial investigations, a driving error by the man led to the accident.
