With Paramount+, the German-speaking streaming market will have another major player at the end of 2022.
The subsidiary of the US company Paramount produces several of its own series for the local audience, as the streaming service announced on Monday.
The cyber thriller »A Thin Line«, for example, revolves around the twin sisters Anna (Saskia Rosendahl) and Benni (Hanna Hilsdorf), who, as hackers, do everything they can to uncover environmental crimes.
When they break into a government server, introverted programmer Anna is arrested while charismatic and manipulative Benni goes underground.
Series creators are Jakob and Jonas Weydemann (»System Crasher«)
Paramount+ is a subsidiary of the media giant Paramount, which already operates the channels Nick, MTV and Comedy Central in Germany.
So far, the streaming service has been available in the USA, Canada, Australia and from Wednesday also in Great Britain.
Actress Uma Thurman has been hired for the UK launch advertising campaign.
Outside the United States, Paramount+ offers nearly 9,000 hours of content - from children's shows to reality shows, movies and original productions to series, dramas and sitcoms from CBS and Showtime.
The service cites »Scream«, »Star Trek: Strange New Worlds«, »PAW Patrol« and »The First Lady« as highlights.
The new service will be available online in Germany, Austria and Switzerland from December and via the Paramount+ app.
As a major international series project, Paramount+ has the Simon Beckett film »The Chemistry of Death« in the making.
Also starring in the six-part thriller are Harry Treadaway (»Penny Dreadful«) and Katie Leung (»The Wheel of Time«).
A total of 150 international original formats are to go into production by 2025.
Recently, after disappointing numbers at Netflix, there was already speculation about an end to the streaming production boom.
In Germany, Sky, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV+, among others, have already been fighting for customers' favor.
Paramount+ had already announced the series "Anywhere" by screenwriter Jana Burbach ("Bad Banks") in March.
Another local project of the streaming service is »The Sheikh«, an eight-part series based on real events about a con artist, directed by director and author Dani Levy (»Alles auf Zucker!«).
