This is made possible with a QR code that can be found on the packaging of selected products.

Cologne/Munich – Consumers who prefer to buy sustainable products should be happy about the innovation on the packaging of the food giant Rewe.

The retailer now tells its customers where the items in its own range come from.

These are a total of 38 selected meat and dairy products from the Rewe Bio brand.

For this purpose, the organic own brands are provided with corresponding QR codes, which the customer can then scan himself.

The code leads the customer to an online platform with product-specific supply chain information.

For example, he knows where the animal was slaughtered, cut up and processed.

This pilot project should also provide identity data for tracing and information on how the animals are kept.

Edeka also offers its customers the option of using fTRACE to track the supply chains of selected own brands with the Animal Welfare Initiative label.

REWE introduces QR code: Information from decomposition to the shelf course

It is a matter close to Rewe's heart to guarantee the traceability of selected own brands from production to the shelf, says Pia Schnück, Head of Sustainability REWE Group Buying GmbH.

“The corresponding QR code can be conveniently scanned using a smartphone.

After entering a so-called LOT number, the customer is shown product-specific information and the individual stages of the product up to its point of origin are disclosed," explains Schnück in a joint press release with the IT manufacturer of the QR technology used.

REWE uses Ftrace to trace organic brands

Rewe uses the "fTRACE" platform, a subsidiary of the Cologne-based company GS1 GmbH.

GS1 reports that the system obtains the information from external primary databases and from information entered into the system by the suppliers themselves.

Edeka and Kaufland are already using this system, writes the

.

EDEKA has been using the system for tracing meat and fish products since 2019.

With the use of this technology, the discounters and supermarkets are taking a further step towards meeting the wishes of their customers, who primarily look for quality and freshness when purchasing meat products.

Unfortunately, the meat sold at fresh food counters is not always of the best quality.

With the new information offensive, customers can finally find out about packaged goods very easily with their own smartphone.
