In Schwäbisch Gmünd in Baden-Württemberg, a poison alarm was triggered on Monday night.
This was preceded by a dispute between a 25-year-old and his 24-year-old partner, which allegedly ended with the man causticizing the woman with ammonia.
According to police headquarters in Aalen, the woman said she had been beaten and choked by her boyfriend.
In the course of the dispute, in which a 19-year-old man is said to have helped the accused at least temporarily, she was then tied up and a liquid – presumably containing ammonia – was poured over her.
Ammonia is a pungent-smelling, colorless and toxic gas that can be harmful to health.
Inhalation of high concentrations causes burns to the nose, throat and respiratory tract.
After the incident, a poison alarm was raised in the residential complex.
As the SWR reported, the fire brigade arrived, entered the apartment with breathing apparatus and full protective suits.
The Schwäbisch Gmünd fire brigade, which was deployed with 48 forces, cleaned and ventilated the apartment.
The operation is said to have lasted until the early hours of the morning.
The police took the 25-year-old suspect into custody.
Nothing is known about a possible motive.
The 19-year-old was not found at the scene of the crime, but the police were able to identify him later in the day.

According to the "Gmünder Tagespost", the woman was showered with cleaning agents containing ammonia and taken to a hospital by the emergency services.
A neighbor told the "Bild" newspaper: "I saw that the man took off his shoes in front of my apartment that night and walked upstairs in his socks.
The woman lives at the top of the house.
Then I heard screams.” Another neighbor reported that the suspect and the victim had had arguments in the past: “Two weeks ago the man hit the woman.
She had a black eye.
They were fighting all the time.”
The investigations by the public prosecutor's office in Ellwangen and the criminal police in Aalen are ongoing.
