A new epidemic?

North Korea has sent medical teams and epidemiological researchers to the province battling an outbreak of intestinal disease, the country's media reported on Sunday.

At least 800 families suffering from what North Korea has only called an "acute intestinal epidemic" have so far received assistance in the southern Wangha province, south of the capital Pyongyang.

South Korean officials say it could be an outbreak of cholera or typhus.

The new eruption puts even more strain on the isolated country as it fights food shortages and a wave of coronary infections.

According to CNN website Rio Jong Chul, the official in charge of emergency epidemic work in North Korea, warned state television viewers on Monday that intestinal diseases could be spread through the belongings, food and beverages of infected people.

Strict isolation of patients is important to prevent its spread, he said.

Aside from typhoid and cholera, the polio virus, hepatitis A virus and cystic dysentery are among the pathogens that cause intestinal disease, Rio said.

The news of the "gut epidemic" comes as North Korea continues to fight the corona, or what it calls "cases of fever."

The KCNA news agency reported another 19,310 new fever cases on Sunday, without specifying how many of those patients were found to be positive for the corona virus.

As of June 19, 73 deaths were reported by KCNA.

Similar to North Korean claims of the "acute intestinal epidemic," it is difficult to independently verify the numbers of cases and recovery reported by North Korean media.
