Dizziness after the roller coaster ride is not surprising.

But some also have balance problems in everyday life.

A common cause is often underestimated.

You're walking along a path and suddenly you have to hold on tight: Many people are affected by dizzy spells, some more, others less.

General practitioners state that about every 13th patient visits their practice because of dizziness

, according to information on the patient information portal published by the Medical Center for Quality in Medicine (ÄZQ).

The German Professional Association of Ear, Nose and Throat Doctors describes dizziness on its website as follows: "Dizziness, medically known as vertigo, is a disturbance of the sense of balance: the affected person loses body security in space, spatial orientation and has a

feeling of swaying or turning

".

Other balance disorders often occur, such as a tendency to fall or even nausea and vomiting.

In the case of such complaints, a doctor will initiate a physical examination as a first step.

Because physical problems such as diseases in the inner ear or migraines can be behind it.

However, in around half of all dizziness patients, doctors cannot find a physical cause

, according to the ÄZQ.

Dizziness can be extremely stressful for those affected.

Anxiety dizziness: When the psyche results in unsteady gait

If the dizziness is not due to an illness, mental stress can be behind the symptoms.

Doctors then speak of psychogenic dizziness.

According to the AOK, 30 to 50 percent of vertigo patients suffer from psychogenic dizziness.

It arises, for example, when family or professional problems result in enormous suffering.

According to the Medical Center for Quality in Medicine, this form of dizziness can also occur together with an anxiety disorder or depression.

like dr

Mark Obermann of the German Society for Neurology informed on the specialist portal Neurologists and Psychiatrists on the Internet that phobic postural dizziness or anxiety dizziness is the most common form of psychogenic dizziness.

This usually begins in connection with special psychological stress such as relationship problems, it is said.

Typical symptoms of anxiety vertigo, according to the portal neurologists and psychiatrists on the net:

  • Attacks of postural dizziness

  • Standing and gait uncertainties

  • restlessness

  • drowsiness

Only a psychotherapist or psychiatrist can make the diagnosis "psychogenic dizziness" with certainty.

If physical causes can be ruled out, referral to a psychotherapist or psychiatrist should be made.

As the AOK informs, there is most often a connection with an anxiety disorder, but other mental illnesses could also trigger the dizziness.

It should be noted that patients often do not perceive the anxiety or depression themselves.
