Home delivery people: the French are ready to pay more to guarantee them a more protective status

2022-06-21T09:29:31.437Z

A very large majority of French people want the working conditions of home delivery people to be aligned with those of employees, according to a study by Ifop.

They cycle the streets to deliver meals or shopping baskets.

For the most part, home delivery people, employed by the major platforms Uber Eats, Just Eat or Deliveroo, are self-employed.

They therefore have, in addition to difficult working conditions, a precarious status which led them, last May, to elect their first representatives to initiate social dialogue with the platforms.

A study by the French Institute of Public Opinion (Ifop), conducted for the legal service company Hello My Business, shows that a very large majority of French people (93%) believe that the home delivery profession should see its status aligned with the working conditions of employees.

The survey was conducted in May 2022 among 1,011 adults representative of the French population, and shows overwhelming support from respondents for improving the working conditions and remuneration of delivery people.

"

It's quite rare in a survey that we discover such majority support

," says Gautier Jardon, researcher at Ifop.

The study shows that the use of home delivery services is widespread in France – a third of respondents have used them this year – and that the French are massively aware of the difficulties of the profession.

Nine out of ten French people believe that the job of delivery driver is poorly paid, 81% think it is difficult and three out of four that it is dangerous.

Notably, it is the most modest socio-professional categories, who share low salaries, who say they are the most ready to make a financial effort.

84% of “

those who receive less than 1,300 euros per month say they are ready for it, compared to 61% of those whose monthly income exceeds 2,500 euros

”.

Regular customers, who have deliveries delivered at least once a week, are more willing to make an effort: 88% want to pay more, compared to 79% for those who order less than once a month.

A good will that will not necessarily translate into action

Beyond statements, inflation may on the contrary raise fears of a decline in budgets dedicated to home delivery.

The people surveyed declared an intention, a wish.

Material constraints could be an obstacle

,” explains Gautier Jardon.

The fast delivery sector is indeed seeing a few clouds appear above its head, due to a lack of profitability in certain geographical areas.

If this market remains "

in full growth

“, as indicated by Pierre Guionin, the general manager in France of the giant of the delivery Gorillas, it is thanks to the public of the large metropolises, less sensitive to the problems of purchasing power.

There is no indication that all categories of users could in fact bear an increase in the costs of door-to-door delivery services.
