In the field of »study and teaching«, German universities only perform below average in an international comparison.

This is shown by a current study by an independent group of experts led by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE), which was presented on Tuesday.

The proportion of graduates who complete their studies within the standard period of study is therefore low for both Bachelor's and Master's courses.

According to the study, the graduation rate in the bachelor’s degree programs is also significantly lower than in the entire sample.

On the other hand, the Master’s graduation rate looks much better.

The German universities are also clearly ahead in the analysis of a balanced gender distribution, the gender balance.

Almost 82 percent of all universities end up in ranking groups A or B.

According to the information, almost two-thirds achieve above-average values for the indicator »Investments in digital learning«.

The authors of the study write that the majority of the other indicators for "study and teaching" are in the middle ranking group C.

The WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management and the Kühne Logistics University - both private institutions - are placed at the top.

Universities in the field of »research«: top

For the study entitled »U-Multirank«, the universities were classified into five groups from »A« (very good) to »E« (poor) based on 30 indicators each.

According to the CHE, this creates a differentiated picture of their strengths and weaknesses.

The results are based, among other things, on data from national statistical sources, data from universities and a survey of around 100,000 students.

106 German universities took part in the study.

The study is funded by the European Commission, the Bertelsmann Foundation and Banco Santander, among others.

The assessment of German universities in the field of »research« is very positive.

According to the study, their "excellent performance" is reflected in almost all individual indicators.

They are particularly good at raising third-party funding for research.

72 percent of German universities are ranked A or B in this area.

Below-average results only prevail in the proportion of authors in all scientific publications.

At the top of the ranking in the field of research: the University of Hohenheim.

International orientation of German universities: »excellent«

The German universities showed weaknesses and strengths in the »knowledge transfer« dimension, it is said.

For example, a very high proportion of joint publications with authors from industry and publications by universities cited in patents, which show that the research results are relevant for technology development, is positive.

When it comes to patents, however, German universities did less well.

According to the study, German universities play a major role in supplying their region with university graduates when it comes to »regional commitment«, but perform below average when it comes to internships for students or publications with partners from the region.

The »international orientation« of German universities is expressly praised in the study.

Overall, two-thirds of all values are above the global average.

The Technical University of Munich and several private universities, the Kühne Logistik University, the Jacobs University, the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management and the WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management, ended up in the top for all criteria that were collected for internationality. Groups.

90 percent of all German universities also have an above-average proportion of academic staff from abroad.

At 82 percent, intensive work is being done with research groups from other countries.

However, there is one weak point: it affects foreign-language courses.

In the bachelor's programs, the majority of the values are below average.
