Parents are legally entitled to ten working days per child per year during which they are released from work.

From three children it is even up to 25 days.

Single parents are entitled to twice the time.

In concrete terms, this means 20 and a maximum of 50 days per child.

However, you must meet three requirements for the exemption:

  • Your child is under the age of twelve.

  • You have a medical certificate from the first day of illness.

  • There is no other person who could care for and care for the child.

There is no statutory entitlement to continued payment of wages if the child is ill during the period of leave.

Then the health insurance company steps in, which pays child sickness benefit.

This is usually 70 percent of the gross salary or 90 percent of the lost net salary.

But what if the sick child is over twelve years old?

Then, according to employment law experts, it is independent enough to be able to stay at home alone.

This means that the entitlement to child sickness benefit expires and the parents have to take vacation if they still want to stay at home to care for the offspring.

However, employees have the opportunity to find a solution together with the employer.

Accordingly, the time spent caring for the sick child can also be compensated for by working overtime, working from home or taking unpaid leave in an emergency.
