Neighboring rights: the French Competition Authority accepts Google's commitments

The competition policeman is closing the fund procedures opened against the American digital giant in this case.


The competition authority (ADLC) announced Tuesday, June 21 to close the proceedings against Google on the neighboring rights file.

It accepts the binding commitments made by the latter.

The American tech giant has already signed with 140 press companies such as AFP,

The question of the remuneration of the press by web companies has been open since July 2019 and the vote on the "

Loi sur les droits Neighbors

".

It forces companies like Google or Facebook to remunerate companies and press agencies for the photos or pieces of text used, for example in their search engines.

In April 2020, the ADLC demanded that Google negotiate "

in good faith

" with the press on the amount of this compensation.

A request which was not respected at first, leading the regulator to impose the record fine of 500 million euros last July.

Several months after this sanction, Google proposed an initial list of commitments in December 2021, then others in April and May 2022. “

The Autorité considers that the commitments proposed by Google are such as to put an end to the concerns of competition expressed.

It therefore decided to accept them and make them compulsory.

They will apply for a period of 5 years, and will be renewable once for a period of 5 years

”, indicates the organization in a press release.
