In a press release on the product recall, the manufacturer stated that the goods were judged to be unmarketable due to an unapproved "Sudan IV" dye.

For this reason, the product would be recalled as a precaution, according to WBZ Nord GmbH in its justification.

The federal states of Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein are affected by this recall.

Spice Recall: Popular product in oriental cuisine

Sumac is a popular spice and is particularly popular in oriental cuisine.

The spice comes from the eastern Mediterranean and is also called "Sicilian sugar".

It is obtained from the red drupe of the evergreen dyer tree.

The ripe fruits are harvested in early autumn, the pulp is dried and ground into powder.

A health-promoting effect is attributed to the spice.

Food experts describe the effect of this spice as being gentle on the stomach and promoting digestion.

It is therefore often served with high-fat dishes.

It can therefore be assumed that the spice mixture will be offered in many Turkish and oriental supermarkets, among others.

Recall: Federal Institute was before dye "Sudan" in spice mixture - risk of cancer

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) explains on its website the following about the “Sudan” dye: “Sudan I-IV are synthetically produced azo dyes that do not occur naturally in food.

Such dyes are therefore considered additives and must be approved for use in food.

There is a general ban on additives in the European Union subject to authorization.

The synthetic dyes Sudan I-IV are not approved as food additives in the European Union.

Foodstuffs that contain them are therefore not marketable in Germany and the European Union."

The institute comes to the conclusion that Sudan dyes can fundamentally damage health.

However, it points out that if you eat food “contains a few milligrams of Sudan dyes once or occasionally, the risk of developing cancer is probably very low.

However, this assessment does not apply to frequent consumption of foods and spices that contain the substance in high concentrations of several thousand milligrams.” The BfR recommends including the dyes Sudan II, III and IV in monitoring measures in addition to Sudan I.
