(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 21 - The World Health Organization announced this morning, coinciding with the summer solstice, the launch of an app that, wherever we are, indicates the level of UV rays and the measures to be taken to expose yourself in the sun safely.

The app, whose name is SunSmart Global UV, is available for free on Apple and Google stores and was created in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization, the United Nations Environment Program and the International Labor Organization.

"Evidence shows that overexposure to UV rays is the leading cause of skin cancer. So it's crucial that people know when and how to protect themselves," said Maria Neira, director of the WHO Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health. .

"We encourage everyone to use the app to protect themselves and their children and to make it a daily habit."

To indicate the level of risk the app uses the UV index, which describes the level of solar ultraviolet radiation on the Earth's surface and is expressed on a scale from 1 (or "Low") to 11 and higher (or "Extreme").

"This app combines weather, environmental, and health expertise to help protect people from the sun both at work and in their leisure time. It is unique in that it uses data from country-level UV and weather stations to provide accurate, location-specific UV index readings." , said the secretary general of the World Meteorological Organization Petteri Tallas.

"It is an excellent example of science at the service of society".
