(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, JUN 22 - The European Commission proposes a ban on the use of pesticides in city parks and binding objectives at EU and national level to halve their use by 2030 compared to 2015-17, encouraging alternative methods.

These are the main elements of the new regulation on the sustainable use of pesticides, presented today in Brussels.

The target is twofold and concerns the use and risk (with reference to the most dangerous substances) of pesticides.

Brussels wants to tighten the principle of using agrochemistry as a last resort solution by forcing farmers to use biological pest prevention and control measures.

The member countries will then set their own national reduction targets, which will take into account the efforts already made, but will have to fall within the parameters defined and agreed with Brussels.

The proposed measures also include the keeping of mandatory registers for farmers and other professional users.

In addition, Member States must establish crop-specific standards that identify alternatives to be used instead of chemical pesticides.

(HANDLE).
