Mothers who are very exhausted by breastfeeding at night and the resulting interrupted sleep can find more rest at night with the help of helpful tips.

Munich – Breastfeeding is a topic that worries many mothers to a greater or lesser extent and even polarizes it in parental circles.

Should mothers breastfeed, if so, exclusively and for how long, during the day and also at night?

What is fine for some women can be difficult for another mother - not only because she feels pain when breastfeeding, but also because the frequency of breastfeeding, especially at night, can be a real challenge.

There are gentle methods that can help prioritize breastfeeding during the day or, if desired, initiate breastfeeding altogether so that mother and child can get a better night's sleep.

When breastfeeding becomes a burden

Parents are confronted with many new issues and challenges in the course of their new phase in life.

Not only breastfeeding, the start of solid food and emotional outbursts of the children are now part of their everyday life.

Parents also think about the topic of third-party care in the day-care center and when their child can be left on their own.

A mother can try to soothe her baby with gentle stroking and holding hands instead of breastfeeding alone.

When it comes to breastfeeding, many mothers can probably agree that they enjoy it - they find that special moment of closeness, the so-called "bonding", that develops between mother and child to be precious.

They also find breastfeeding practical and easy.

But if a mother is woken up more than three times during the night because the baby is literally looking for the breast and wants to be breastfed, this quickly becomes a physical strain.

Especially children who are older than six to eight months and already receive complementary food, it is not always hunger that fuels the need for breastfeeding at night, but rather the closeness and bits of habit.

Weaning at night can help to relieve mothers, because after all, they also need all their strength for the baby during the day.

Wean the baby: a ten-night plan can help

The so-called ten-night plan of the American pediatrician Dr.

Jay Gordon helps parents gently reduce baby's feeding at night, but not physical closeness.

The baby should be at least a year old, according to Gordon.

Babies who are already given complementary food at five months and are possibly still being bottle-fed can no longer be breastfed at night a little sooner.

The important thing is: mother and father should always feel comfortable with it, it is always an individual decision as to how long and to what extent a baby is breastfed.

Wean baby: Night one to three

  • In advance, the mother should consider when she needs her night's rest most and choose the period of nightly weaning accordingly, for example between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.

According to Gordon, make sure you last seven hours over the first three nights.

After this time has elapsed, in the example at 5:00 a.m., you can breastfeed as usual.

  • Schedule the last meal or breastfeed before you put your child to bed before your designated time, such as before 10:00 p.m.

If your baby then wakes up at night and cries, comfort it and calm it down by breastfeeding – but only briefly, five to ten minutes, depending on the baby.

In any case, it is crucial that it does not fall asleep through the short breastfeeding, but rather through cuddling, being rocked to sleep or something similar.

Wean baby: Night four to six

  • On nights four through six, do the same as the first three.

The only difference: when your child wakes up, you give them closeness and calm them down without breastfeeding them.

It is quite possible that your child will react by screaming loudly.

Wait a moment and see what happens.

Continue to soothe your baby and try to rock him to sleep.

  • Here, too, it is the mother's individual decision whether she wants to wait or breastfeed the baby briefly to calm it down - this may be important if your child doesn't let himself be calmed down at all.

If you breastfed your baby again on one of the nights, don't pressure yourself that you made that decision.

You can try again the following night.

In such phases, the fathers are also in demand, as they can help calm the little one.

Weaning baby: From night seven

  • If your baby has taken to it relatively well over the last few nights with little or no breastfeeding, you may feel a little calmer from night seven – with your baby and also with you. But not every child is the same.

Therefore, do not put yourself and your baby under pressure by possibly letting the little one cry for a long time.

  • According to Gordon, from the seventh night you should try to soothe the baby completely without breastfeeding, preferably only by stroking, holding hands and gently coaxing or singing - but not by carrying it around.

From night seven, fathers can once again provide crucial support with their help.
