At the water's edge, he is the big favourite. And, more than an outward sign of modesty, adapts to the desires of the time.

Of course, the string bikini has its followers.

And not just a little: thongs, tiny two-pieces and the like have become the new big subjects of French beaches, from Hossegor to Juan-les-Pins via the cliffs of Normandy.

A trend that came from America, under the influence of social networks and the Kardashian clan, whose hundreds of millions of subscribers feed on undressed plastics.

However, the success of the one-piece swimsuit is undeniable.

This model is even “a best-seller among brands” recalls Vanessa Causse, trend forecaster at Eurovet, organizer of the Salon de la lingerie which has just closed its doors on June 20, in Paris.

This enthusiasm for the one-piece is indeed not new: a study by Statista Research Department dating from 2019 indicates that 52,

Popular with the masses, therefore, the one-piece no longer has much to do with the sporty, very functional swimsuit used in chlorinated swimming pools.

“He became very undressed, very indented.

We are in a period where clothing is hybrid, it must respond to different ways of wearing it, different morphologies, while enhancing, emphasizing and shaping the body.

It is now adapted to be worn in the evening, with shorts or jeans,” explains Vanessa Causse.

The camouflaged belly

This wave of ultra sexy has greatly contributed to shaking up the somewhat dusty image of the one-piece swimsuit.

If today's model gives the opportunity to have very plunging cutouts and necklines, it continues to camouflage the belly, the rolls or what one does not want to show by giving, in passing, a small stroke of the penknife in the era of body positive.

“This movement makes women believe that we have to accept ourselves.

It's not true.

The one-piece swimsuit allows you to hide what you don't necessarily like, it inscribes the female body in a form of desexualization in the face of the hypersexualization presented by a very small two-piece," analyzes researcher Audrey Millet. and author of the book "The underside of the swimsuit, another story of the body"*.

"You have to see the return of the one-piece as a complementary proposition to the bikini, in addition to being more comfortable," she continues.

These two models are not opposed, quite the contrary.

"Young people often have both," says Audrey Millet.

We wear it according to the mood or the desire because the one-piece swimsuit offers a very different relationship to the body from that of the 1990s. “Women wore it in a very dynamic way, with a very toned silhouette.

Today, it is less gymnastic and wants to be designed for all morphologies, also being in a process of comfortable seduction, ”adds Audrey Millet.

A hybrid model, in a way.
