Mint refreshes and tastes good to almost everyone.

A homemade mint syrup is particularly popular with guests and is also suitable as a gift.

Munich – Anyone who loves homemade elderberry syrup should consider homemade mint syrup.

The latter not only tastes less sweet, but is at least as versatile.

You need the following ingredients for the syrup.

Mint is one of the fastest growing herbs and spreads luxuriantly in raised beds within a few months.

If you harvest them correctly, you can not only dry the leaves or process them into pesto - you can also make a homemade syrup with which you can spice up Prosecco, water or cocktails.

You need the following ingredients for a bottle of mint syrup:

  • 50 to 100 grams of mint leaves

  • An organic lemon

  • A liter of water

  • 500 grams of sugar, honey

  • Or a sugar alternative like erythritol or xylitol

1. For the preparation, wash the mint leaves and chop them coarsely or puree them lightly with the fork.

2. Wash and squeeze the organic lemon and slice the peel and either use it in the syrup preparation or use the lemon peels for an effective remedy against limescale and dirt.

3. Put the mint, lemon juice and unwaxed lemon zest, if you like, in a saucepan with a liter of water.

Cover and let the mixture steep overnight.

4. The next day, bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for a few minutes, then remove the pot from the heat to allow the mixture to cool.

5. Pour the almost ready syrup through a fine sieve or tea towel to remove the mint leaves.

6. Finally, add the sugar to the now clear syrup and bring the whole thing to the boil one last time. Let it boil down over a low heat for about 15 minutes until it has a slightly viscous consistency.

Fill the still hot syrup into clean bottles and seal tightly.

Just like homemade elderberry syrup, the slightly tart peppermint syrup is also a nice gift when you are invited to dinner.
