A fan of Bundesliga soccer club Hertha BSC died a month after an altercation with another man.
The 55-year-old Michael R. succumbed to his severe injuries in the hospital.
The State Criminal Police Office is now investigating the alleged perpetrator for bodily harm resulting in death, as also reported by "Der Tagesspiegel".
After the relegation game between Hertha BSC and Hamburger SV on May 19, Michael R. got into an argument with a man near the Olympic Stadium.
The hitherto unknown perpetrator, who is said to have worn a top with the Hansa Rostock club logo, got out and hit R. in the face with his fist.
He fell and hit the back of his head on the road.
It has not yet been clarified whether the two men clashed because of the football game or because of their fan affiliation.
It also remains unclear whether the alleged perpetrator had previously attended the game.
However, Hertha BSC and Hansa Rostock have been enemies for several years.
Berlin's Senator for the Interior, Iris Spranger, reported on Wednesday evening about the man's death: She wrote on Twitter: "It breaks my heart to learn that Michael has died.
A 55-year-old man was killed after the Hertha relegation game.
My thoughts are with his wife and family.
You have my sincerest condolences.”
The Berlin police are now looking for other witnesses.
