Salvini-Rackete case, the documents go to the Senate

Judge, pronounce on the unquestionability of the sentences. Trial suspended (ANSA)

It will be the Senate that will evaluate whether the sentences, published on social networks, with which Matteo Salvini, in the summer of three years ago, defined the then commander of Sea Watch 3, Carola Rackete, "sbruffoncella who makes politics on the skin of a few dozen of migrants "or" rich German outlaw ", whether or not they are unquestionably covered by his role as senator and, at the time, as interior minister.

The decision was made by the judge of the Court of Milan, Maria Burza, who acknowledged one of the preliminary questions advanced by Salvini's lawyer, Claudia Eccher, and then transmitted Palazzo Madama the documents of the trial in which the leader of the League is accused of defamation aggravated against the 34-year-old activist.

"I am satisfied in how much our preliminary question has been accepted - commented the defender of the former Minister of the Interior -. It was a due act on the part of the judge. It was a correct decision".

Not so for Rackete's lawyer, Alessandro Gamberini: "We express our radical dissent for this decision, because those expressions had nothing to do with Salvini's role as parliamentarian, both for the methods used and for the contents".

In the courtroom, shortly before the reading of the ordinance, a timid attempt at conciliation was aired.

Yesterday, in fact, the environmentalist, through his lawyer, filed a statement in which he expressed his intention to remit the complaint against the secretary of the Northern League against a letter of apology and compensation.

A proposal remained pending, both because the lawyer Eccher had not yet had time to illustrate it to his client and because both parties have indicated that they do not believe that a recomposition can be achieved.

The proceeding arose following a lawsuit by the commander of the 'armed' ship to rescue migrants at sea.

Among the indicted statements, made live on Facebook and via Twitter posts between June and July 2019, there are also "rich and spoiled communist" and "German criminal".

For prosecutor Giancarla Serafini, as he said in the hearing in which the defense had posed the preliminary questions including the one accepted today, those of Salvini "are not sentences that pertain to a political speech, even from the Ministry of the time, but real attacks on the person, on his dignity, expressions of denigration. It was a direct attack on the person ".

Now, while the trial is 'frozen', the floor is passed to the Senate.
