The state ministers of education have called on the federal government to extend the support program for schoolchildren, which was launched due to the consequences of the corona pandemic, until the end of the 2023/2024 school year.

The Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) announced on Friday after a conference in Berlin that the program should open up funding opportunities for a further 500 million euros longer than previously planned with regard to learning deficits and psychosocial effects in the school sector.

During the pandemic, the federal government launched the “Catching up after Corona for children and young people” program worth two billion euros for the years 2021 and 2022.

One billion of these come from the Federal Ministry of Education.

The money is primarily intended to promote learning to close learning gaps caused by the pandemic.

The KMK called for the federal and state governments to jointly develop measures to overcome learning deficits and educational disadvantages and to ensure their financing.

The Hamburg school senator Ties Rabe (SPD) explained that the catch-up and support program that has now started is far from sufficient.

"It is urgently necessary for the federal and state governments to jointly set up a permanent program to overcome educational deficits and psychosocial problems in children and young people," explained Rabe.

In this context, it will also be of great importance to find answers to the growing shortage of teachers.

KMK President: Don't just think in terms of election periods

The KMK President and Schleswig-Holstein's Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) explained that recommendations for teacher training and recruitment should now be drawn up.

"We will continue on the path we took in spring and increase the number of study places, the design of the training, advertising for the teaching profession, lateral and lateral entry, multi-professionalism and the assurance of quality and qualifications over the period of my KMK - Presidency out in focus.«

Prien emphasized that one should not only think in terms of individual electoral periods, but the development of education must be thought of ten or 20 years into the future.

The ministers of culture also passed further developed educational standards for the subjects German and mathematics for the primary level, the first school leaving certificate and the middle school leaving certificate.

These replace the previous educational standards that date back to 2003 and 2004.

"The further developed educational standards take up almost 20 years of experience with the previous educational standards, are based on the current status of the didactic discussion and also provide innovative impulses," explained Prien.

The educational standards served the cross-state, nationwide understanding of learning goals and content in the subjects.
