With the aim of discussing the preparations and requirements of the “Transformation in Education” summit, the Ministry of Education started today a two-day workshop to discuss a Syrian working paper for the summit that will be held in New York next September on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly under the title “Developing transformative learning in light of wars and disasters. Education in the Syrian Arab Republic is an example” at the Damaroz Hotel in Damascus.

The working paper includes a presentation on what has been achieved in Syria for the plan that was followed to continue education despite wars and disasters, in addition to the mechanisms through which education was transformed from traditional to skilled to enhance the learner's personality and make him socially able to understand the environment around him and have skills to develop his educational capabilities and thus enter the market Working directly, in addition to presenting the weaknesses and strengths of the Syrian educational system, how the war affected it, how to address it, and the opinion of young people on the future of education.

Minister of Education Dr. Darem Tabbaa explained during the workshop that the working paper that Syria will present on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly aims to present the experience of education in Syria in light of the war on it and to use it to develop education in a number of countries in the world that suffer from disasters and wars.

The Minister of Education indicated that after preparing and discussing this paper and setting the final points during this workshop, Syria will participate in the introductory meeting of the summit in Paris on June 28 and 29 to present the paper and discuss it before presenting it next September in New York at the main meeting of the Education Transformation Summit.

For his part, the Head of the Education Department at the United Nations Children’s Fund “UNICEF” Frederic Afolter pointed out that education in Syria continued through several tracks “the national curriculum, the category B curriculum, self-learning, focusing on emotional education, life skills and psychological support” and continuing to work on developing the education plan and addressing the problem of Child labor and dropout from education despite the challenges that Syria faced during the crisis.

The Assistant Minister of Education, Dr. Eng. Mahmoud Bani Al-Marjah, spoke about the reality of vocational education in the ministry and the work to transform vocational schools into productive centers after the issuance of Decree 38, indicating that work is underway to issue executive instructions and equip three training centers to qualify cadres and follow up on creating new professions to broaden horizons for students.

Dean of the Faculty of Education at Damascus University, Dr. Zainab Zayoud, spoke about her participation in the main committee related to education outcomes and their relationship to the labor market, stressing the importance of coordination with partners to achieve the transformation of education based on the educational reality in all its aspects and inputs and focusing on self-learning.

In her turn, the head of the National Union of Syrian Students, Dareen Suleiman, stressed the importance of networking between the Ministries of Education, Higher Education and Scientific Research to develop curricula in university education and thus develop education teachers to achieve education transformation. Sustainable are the concepts on which the curricula developed in Syria are built to achieve education transformation.

For his part, Director of Vocational and Technical Education, Eng. Ghassan Qabakibo, talked about production lines and securing a real production environment for students, thus securing a financial return for the learner and student. The Director General of the General Authority for Education Buildings, Haitham Badawi, indicated the preparation of four smart school models that are attractive, child-friendly and environmentally friendly, and benefit from sustainable energy in cooperation with UNICEF.
