Around nine months after an attack on a memorial event, the trial against two young people began before the district court in Hamburg.

A 17-year-old and his 15-year-old brother are accused of having used anti-Semitic insults at a vigil for Israel in Hamburg last September.

The older brother also has to answer for assault.

He is said to have hit one of the participants in the face with his fist, seriously injuring him.

The suspects fled after the crime on e-scooters.

A few days after the attack, the brothers from Berlin were identified by the police using video recordings.

Victim nearly blind in one eye

Due to the age of the accused, the main hearing before the district court in Hamburg is being held behind closed doors.

Before the start of the hearing, the 61-year-old victim, who is acting as a joint plaintiff, made a statement.

The young people first filmed the participants and then shouted, among other things, "Fucking Jews!" said the man, who is still wearing an eye patch after the attack.

He wanted to talk to the young people, but then immediately got a punch in the face and fell to the ground, said the person concerned.

Even today he can no longer see anything with his right eye and can only distinguish between light and dark.
