Even if plants and vegetables are still growing luxuriantly at the moment;

It is ideal if you prepare your garden now for the approaching autumn and winter.

Munich – With the summer solstice and the associated beginning of summer on June 21st, the gardening year is at its peak: warmth, sun and plenty of watering have meant that gardeners can look forward to a rich harvest by July at the latest: lettuce, tomatoes, but berries such as gooseberries, strawberries and raspberries can now also be harvested daily.

But a different picture can be observed with the perennials: While the sun was still at its highest point on June 21, the solar radiation then decreases again, which your garden plants will also notice, just according to the farmer’s rule “Johannis does winter open the door".

You should heed the following tips in summer for the approaching autumn and winter:

  • Plants such as perennials should no longer be fertilized from autumn so that they harden sufficiently and adjust to the cold season.

  • You should now loosen the soil again regularly.

  • Also harvest the first ripe cherries before they rot on the branches or are pecked by birds.

  • It's not too early to start weeding again.

  • A topiary cut on the hedge is recommended in mid to late July.

    If you cut away more, you may be violating the Federal Nature Conservation Act.

    This protects breeding birds and nests.

  • If you have a garden pond, you should check the water quality again in summer.

In June and July, you can also start thinking about which vegetables you want to harvest in winter.

For example, if you plant cabbage such as kale or Brussels sprouts in June and July, you can harvest them from October.
