The management of the Royal Opera House specifies that the German tenor will not be able to perform in Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci, due to "the impact of the disease on his voice".

He had been through it so far, singing on the networks during the confinements or mobilizing for the operas and the performance halls which had been emptied of their spectators during the pandemic.

Jonas Kaufmann has however been caught up in the covid, as announced by the management of the Royal Opera House in London on Friday.

The star singer was on the bill at the prestigious hall of Covent Garden from July 5 for evenings bringing together

Cavalleria Rusticana

by Mascagni and

Pagliacci

by Leoncavallo, two veristic operas where the tenor roles are among the most famous in the repertoire.

But Jonas Kaufmann contracted the virus and the disease

"impacted his voice",

according to the formula of the London Opera, which remains very elusive on the state of health of the tenor.

As a result, the German singer is unable to perform the inaugural performance on July 5.

For the following ones, the Royal Opera House already forfeited him for the role of Paillasse but still hoped that he would be able to sing that of Turridu in

Cavalleria Rusticana

.

This double production chained the defections since ten days ago, the Royal Opera House had announced the package of the Georgian mezzo Anita Rachvelishvili.

As for Jonas Kaufmann, he is on the bill for a dozen concerts in the summer before a production by

Peter Grimes

of Britten, scheduled for September in Munich.
