SPIEGEL politicians' staircase: Olaf Scholz falls, green ministers stand their ground

2022-06-24T17:25:14.060Z

According to a recent survey, the Federal Chancellor is clearly losing popularity and is falling behind a Green trio of ministers. The trend is also downwards for two FDP cabinet members.

Around six months after his election as Federal Chancellor, Olaf Scholz has lost a lot of appeal among the voters.

Only 49 percent of those surveyed would like the SPIEGEL politicians to play an important role, 23 percentage points less than in December.

Like Scholz, other SPD celebrities such as Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (minus 19) or Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (minus 12) do worse.

On the other hand, the Green cabinet representatives Robert Habeck, Annalena Baerbock and Cem Özdemir, who now occupy places 2 to 4 after Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, can assert themselves.

Kantar's survey was conducted by telephone between June 14 and 16 among 1,001 respondents.

While Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) is also falling behind, the CDU Prime Ministers Hendrik Wüst and Daniel Günther, who have been confirmed in office, are demoscopically struggling with the fact that they are not well known: around half of those surveyed can not do anything with the names.

War in Ukraine and increased prices particularly burdensome

Of several crises in June 2022, the Germans were most depressed by the war in Ukraine and the associated general price increases.

Older people in particular are concerned about the return of war in Europe, while younger people are more concerned about inflation.

Opinion is divided on the question of whether Germany should expand its arms deliveries to Ukraine: 50 percent are in favor, the other half are against or do not answer the question.

Advocates of more arms deliveries are more common in the west than in the east, with supporters of the Greens and FDP being strong, while supporters of the AfD and the left are clearly opposed to such an expansion.

Two is better when traveling by train

A quarter of those surveyed have now bought the much-discussed 9-euro ticket.

Around every tenth person already has a subscription for local public transport.

However, more than 60 percent stated that they had neither the 9-euro ticket nor a public transport subscription.
