(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, JUN 24 - The US Supreme Court has abolished the historic Roe v.
Wade with whom in 1973 Cortea herself legalized abortion in the USA.
Individual states will now be free to apply their laws on the matter.
The decision was made in the "Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization" case, in which the judges upheld the Mississippi law prohibiting termination of pregnancy after 15 weeks.
It was the only clinic left in the state that offered abortion.
"Abortion presents a profound moral issue. The constitution does not prohibit the citizens of any state from regulating or prohibiting abortion," wrote Igiudici.
A draft leaked in recent weeks (drafted by Judge Samuel Alito, dating back to February and later confirmed as authentic by the court) had indicated that the majority of the essays were in favor of overturning Roe v Wade, causing controversy and protests in the US.
Out of 50 states, 26 (including Texas and Oklahoma) have more laws
restrictive on the matter.
Nine have abortion limits that precede the 'Roe v.
Wade ', and which have not yet been enforced but which may now become effective, while 13 have so-called' dormant bans' which should be immediately enforced.
