After the shots were fired at a vocational college in Bielefeld, the 20-year-old suspect was admitted to a closed psychiatric ward by a judge.
He suffers from a psychiatric illness, police said.
The man is said to have planned a killing spree at the school and shot several times at the door of the staff room with a blank gun.
There were no injuries.
In a self-recorded video he had announced his project on the Internet.
During the subsequent search of the school building, the police discovered Molotov cocktails, a dagger, a knife and two pistols.
The suspect was not a student at the vocational college
According to the current state of knowledge, the arrested person is neither a former nor a current student at the vocational college.
Several students and teachers who were in the school building at the time of the crime accepted an offer of care from the police.
A teacher had alerted the police on Friday and reported gunshot noises in the building.
The police had arrived with a large contingent, special forces were added.
The suspect fled to a flat roof and was overpowered there.
On Friday evening, the police searched the room of the 20-year-old, who lived in a care facility.
Investigators hope the evidence found there will provide clues as to his motive.
