As a sign of full solidarity with Ukraine and under the still very strong effect of the energy shock caused by the Russian gas cuts, the first G7 of Olaf Scholz opens, which will be the host welcoming the great of the earth in the heart of the Bavarian Alps, Germany.

At Elmau Castle - the same where Angela Merkel hosted Barack Obama 7 years ago -

the intervention of Volodymyr Zelensky is expected,

who will connect on video Monday morning, at the invitation of the Chancellor.

But the discussions will mainly focus on

how to stem energy prices

, with Europeans returning from the Brussels summit - and the postponement on the price cap - and Joe

Biden

arriving to lend a hand and with the oil price cap proposal.

The American president lands in Europe also with the aim of increasingly stemming Russia, with possible new sanctions, but also to strengthen the anti-China front with an alternative plan to the Silk Road.

Indeed, the Elmau summit comes at a very hot moment, a few days after the German decision to trigger the gas emergency plan, due to the drastic reduction in supplies from Moscow.

And to this the chancellor dedicates the message on the eve of the eve: "Many things have become more expensive. Food, but also energy. Petrol, gas, everything has become more expensive in a year. For this we must prepare".

In light of the current crises, adds the Bundeskanzler in the podcast on Saturday, "we must agree with the others what needs to be done. Only together will we be able to face the challenges related to this new situation".

Scholz recalls the origins of the summit: that G6 which, at the time of Helmut Schmidt, had to deal with the oil crisis.

"Now it is important to discuss the current situation and at the same time to worry that

climate change

is stopped . We must also do it to leave the fossil road in the long run and for this reason one of the tasks will be to set up a climate club, in which the States who want to achieve this goal, work together. In Elmau - he concludes - we will be able to make important decisions. If we act in a united and determined way ".

The German Sherpas assure that the great of the Earth have never been more united than now:

the line of Scholz, Emmanuel Macron, Mario Draghi and Joe Biden on Ukraine would be of a "granite" compactness

, despite the chancellor's hesitations - now outdated - on the sending of heavy weapons to Kiev and the tones often appeared different between Europeans (the Russians "should not be humiliated", Macron said) and the Anglo-American axis, with Biden and Boris Johnson determined to arm Ukraine until victory.

In the bilateral meeting between Scholz and Biden, scheduled for Sunday, the energy issue will also be discussed: the Americans are pushing to increase pressure on Moscow also on this front, just as in Europe there are fears that Putin may decide to completely cut gas supplies .

Biden - in the Old Continent for the G7 and the Spanish NATO summit - will try to reassure Europe of US support.

European sources report that EU leaders are evaluating the American proposal on the price cap for oil, but without "a great appetite to reopen the sixth package of sanctions", the one that affects Russian oil.

Draghi and the other leaders will arrive in the morning, for the first working session scheduled for 12.30 on the global economy, while already on the eve

a few thousand demonstrators

(3,500 compared to the expected 20,000) marched in protest through the streets of Munich.

The theme of partnerships, infrastructures and investments will continue, and, in the evening, a third session on foreign policy and security.

The crucial day, however, will be Monday, with the working session together with Zelensky, where the partners will reaffirm their unconditional support for Ukraine, and then welcome the special guests wanted by Scholz at the summit that opens its doors, in a strategic way, to the leaders of India, Indonesia, South Africa, Senegal and Argentina.

With them we will face a session dedicated to global food security and gender equality.
