About half of recruiters devote up to 30 seconds to an initial screening of a resume document they receive, according to surveys on the subject.

With time and specialization in their job they learn to filter in seconds the resume that is completely irrelevant and focus only a little more on the borderline ones.

So what makes a document borderline, how to write a resume and what mistakes should be avoided?

All the details in the article.

Do not write a resume too long

Manpower experts argue that a resume should not be longer than one page.

This is not always possible, especially if you already have an extensive career behind you.

The required spacing between paragraphs also takes its toll on the page.

Therefore, even if you are not able to reduce your resume as recommended to one page (and no, changing the font from 11 to 8 is not a solution, you do not want to challenge the recruiter's reading abilities) - at least try to reduce where possible.

Manpower experts recommend not including places where you have worked briefly (about this in detail in the next section), not including old jobs (about that in the section that follows) and you can also omit the "hobbies" section.

Your fondness for yoga and growing potted plants will not affect your chances of getting a job interview.

Do not put in jobs where you have worked for a short time

Did you work for two months at a company, did you (or did the manager) come to the conclusion that this was not it and moved on?

Did you start working at a start-up and soon after it closed?

Did their replacement work during her three months of maternity leave?

In all these cases it is not certain that it is worth noting the short-term job in the resume.

Managers are looking for stability and a person who jumps from place to place is seen by them as unstable and prone to disaster, someone who will move on from them soon as well.

If you still have significant value for the short job you did (you learned a lot in it, you worked for a prominent company) - you can mention it and state the reason for leaving.

That is, if she is "the company closed" or "I replaced an employee who went on maternity leave for three months" and not "within two weeks they realized I was not suitable and fired me".

Cases like this really are better than just not putting in a resume document.

Not to mention old jobs

It's nice that after the army you worked in technical support at a computer company and did not have to be a waiter, but if you are already 50 - really not sure that this information is needed.

Especially if the number of jobs you have moved since is high.

There is no need to tire the recruiter of reading unnecessary clauses alongside the more important ones.

When writing a resume it is advisable to focus on looking for jobs of the last decade and the most relevant positions for the job for which you are applying.

If it comes to significant positions such as senior appointments - it is okay to also mention positions you filled more than a decade ago - but it is better to only list the really important ones, and even then write their details briefly.

In the personal details it is enough to indicate the city where you live (Photo: ShutterStock)

Not to mention character traits

so you say you're perfectionist (no recruiter has heard of this before), professional (if you wrote - it's probably true) and have good interpersonal skills?

You will not believe how many people attest to the same things in their resumes.

Independent revelry is a kind of white noise for resume readers - and it is at best.

Either they are ignored or they lower the chance that they will invite you to a job interview (for fear of lack of self-awareness).

Manpower experts indicate that they will try to absorb your personal qualities in the placement process (in personal interviews and / or tests at the screening institute).

In the resume, mention the receipts - what you did.

Do not enter unnecessary details

No one sends out rejection letters that are printed on paper and put in envelopes with stamps.

Therefore in the personal details it is enough to indicate the city where you live.

It is also possible the street.

The focus is really unnecessary.

There is also no need to include your photo in the resume (assuming you do not apply for a modeling job).

The details that are important to make sure are specified - and correct - are your phone number and email address.

Regarding the email - we hope that the name you chose when Gmail just opened and you were 12 years old is not CoolDude92.

To create the right impression the email address must be respectful (first name / last name or their various connections like first name and first letter of last name or vice versa).

Also, although in Israel it is quite common to indicate age and marital status in the resume - not only is it not necessary, but screening candidates according to these criteria is illegal.

Besides, if you mentioned military service that ended in 2010 the recruiter in any case knew how to figure out on your own what your age was.

Take care of proofreading

Sounds almost elementary to say that, but spelling mistakes will severely damage the chances of anyone even continuing to read your resume after those have been identified by him.

And if you think these are exceptional cases, know that a Google human resources manager once said that 58% of the resources he receives are thrown away immediately for exactly this reason.

More than half!

So you probably know that you write "job" and not "message", "role" and not "job", but you will be surprised how easily you can slip what is called "typo" (typing error) or can letters (who does not encounter "Internet") That go under the radar.

The difference between "they" and "they" is also missed by many.

Of course one should also be careful about the wording and avoid recommending or mixing phrases that do not go together.

A recruiter who received a resume with the extension "Recommendations will be welcomed on demand" closed the resume file and moved on as soon as he read it.

Also "is" and "which"

Now that you've learned what hurts your resume document, it's time to fix and resubmit.
