Today, the Ministry of Education, in cooperation with the Center for Educational Measurement and Evaluation, held a training course on how to use the “Stanford Binet” scale for psychological and social counselors, with the participation of members of the Psychological and Social Counseling Department in the Directorate of Educational Supervision, counselors and specialist mentors from the governorates, at the Ministry’s building in Damascus.

The five-day course aims to provide the trainees with psychological and social counselors in the educational field the skill of applying the Stanford Binet Intelligence Scale to students, which the counselor can adopt as a diagnostic tool and an indicator of the student’s weaknesses and strengths to help him develop individual plans to address the problems encountered. The student, in cooperation with the school’s teaching and administrative staff, contributes to creating an appropriate learning environment to raise the student’s performance according to his mental abilities and creative potential.

The Stanford test is an individual test to measure cognitive abilities and intelligence from early childhood to the age of 85 and works to diagnose various cases of cognitive delay in children, mental retardation, learning difficulties and mental giftedness, according to the head of the Psychological and Social Guidance Department at the Ministry, Dr. Sabet Suleiman, who indicated in a statement to SANA reporter. The goal of this training is to detect talented and distinguished students and students with learning difficulties to integrate them with ordinary students through special programs, noting that a central team will be formed that will train local teams in all governorates to be a nucleus for training in their governorates and to publish the Stanford test .

Assistant Minister of Education Abdul Hakim Al-Hammad pointed out the importance of this training for the intelligence scale so that counselors can apply it in their schools with students and on the ground to reach feasible results through the process of monitoring and research and how to evaluate cases, stressing the importance of the scale as it can be applied to individuals of different ages, levels and branches. scholastic.

Director of Educational Supervision Enas Maih indicated that searching for talented and distinguished students and diagnosing cases of learning difficulties is a new task awaiting psychological and social counselors in schools after completing their training on applying the Stanford tests to measure intelligence, pointing out that this scale is graded and commensurate with the age and mental abilities of the child.

Head of Latakia Research Department, Dr. Dalal Ammar, indicated that the test is an individual test to measure students’ cognitive abilities and intelligence and works to diagnose different cases of cognitive delay in children, mental retardation, learning difficulties and mental talent. It includes a number of tests that focus on the visual aspect, sensory discrimination, the extent of number memory, and others.

Baraem Saleh from the Center for Measurement and Evaluation stressed that the most important stage in an individual’s life is from the age of four to 12 years, because it is a stage of establishing himself, his personality, and his mental and cognitive powers. It is noteworthy that the Stanford scale was the first global tool that entered Syria and was harmonized with the Syrian environment at the Center for Educational Standardization and Evaluation in Damascus. The scale began in 2012 and was launched in schools in 2019.
