2022-06-26T15:13:46.707Z

Nearly 2,000 migrants attempted to cross the border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla on Friday June 24. At least 23

"It's unheard of in Morocco and Nador which highlights the true content of Moroccan and Spanish migration policies," says Omar Naji, in charge of the migrant file at the Moroccan Association for Human Rights ( AMDH).

Nearly 2,000 migrants tried to force their way into the Spanish enclave of Melilla, in northern Morocco, on Friday.

“More than 500 of them “coming from countries in sub-Saharan Africa” then forced the entry of the border post with “shears” and 133 would have managed to return to the enclave, declares the prefecture of Melilla.

Located on the northern coast of Morocco, Melilla and the other Spanish enclave of Ceuta are the EU's only land borders on the African continent and are regularly subject to attempted entry by migrants seeking to reach the 'Europe.

Moroccan NGOs demand the opening of an investigation

“Clashes” between migrants and Moroccan agents took place, resulting in injuries on both sides.

Some exiles have fallen from great heights trying to climb the fence that separates the Spanish enclave from Moroccan territory.

At least 27 people died in this humanitarian drama, according to the AMDH and many others are injured.

Spain denounced a "violent assault" fomented by "mafias that traffic in human beings".

While Moroccan NGOs criticize the use of very violent methods by the police: "No more corpses and injured sub-Saharan and Sudanese migrants thrown to the ground, without any help on the spot under the eyes of the authorities who do not nothing to help them,” laments Omar Naji.

The latter are calling for the opening of a serious investigation “to shed light on this umpteenth drama of migration at the gates of the European Union”.
