Tom Cruise has long been a world star.

For the first time in his career, however, a film with him has now grossed more than a billion dollars – "Top Gun: Maverick" has been running for five weeks, and the film broke the limit at the weekend.

The sequel to the 1980s classic is only the second film to do so during the pandemic.

Previously, the comic book adaptation »Spider-Man: No Way Home« had grossed $1.9 billion at the box office worldwide.

»Top Gun: Maverick« has come in at exactly $1,006,423,000 so far.

The box office result of »Top Gun: Maverick« is even more impressive given that the film is not represented in the two important film sales markets of China and Russia.

In the USA, the action vehicle is already the most successful film of the year, where it was neck-and-neck at the weekend with the newly launched Presley biopic »Elvis«.

It ended in a tie: both films grossed $30.5 million.

In addition to the makers of the film and Cruise himself, who turns 60 on July 3, the US Air Force is also happy about the success of the film.

When the 1986 original made Tom Cruise a superstar, the US Air Force said it saw a 500 percent increase in applications to become a jet pilot.

Now, too, the military wants to capitalize on the film's success, so they run an ad in the US that runs in theaters before the film begins.

Online magazine LiveWire dug up a 1990 interview with Tom Cruise in which he said the following about the accusation that Top Gun was promoting the military: “I want the kids to know that real war doesn't look like it does in this movie.

It's a rollercoaster ride, not a representation of reality.«
