Cucumbers are one of the classics in the vegetable patch.

But even experienced hobby gardeners quickly make mistakes during cultivation, which endanger the plants in the long term.

Whether it's cucumbers, peeled cucumbers or pickled cucumbers - if you grow vegetables in your garden,

cucumbers

(

Cucumis sativus

) should not be missing.

But both when growing in the greenhouse and in the vegetable patch, you can already spoil the tasty fruit with small mistakes or even endanger the whole plant.

Therefore, you should heed a few important rules when growing cucumbers.

All sorts of mistakes can happen when growing cucumbers.

The three biggest mistakes when growing cucumbers

  • Plant cucumbers too early:

Cucumbers love it bright and warm.

Therefore, you should start sowing outdoors or

always wait for the ice saints before planting.

If you still want to start earlier, black mulch film has proven its worth.

It increases the ground temperature by around four degrees Celsius.

If there is a risk of frost, cover young plants with fleece or buckets so that they are not damaged.

Many also prefer cucumbers indoors before they go into the greenhouse or bed.

Start sowing in pots two to three weeks before planting

out - otherwise the young plants will be too big.

As soon as the cucumbers have attached two real leaves, they go outside.

  • Do not use climbing aids:

You should use climbing aids so that cucumbers can dry off well and no fungal diseases such as powdery mildew develop.

In the greenhouse, cords are suitable for this, which you stretch between the floor and the roof, otherwise you can get ready-made trellises made of wood or bean trellis from garden retailers.

Incidentally, powdery mildew is also a reason why you should rather not plant tomatoes next to cucumbers.

  • Water incorrectly:

If cucumbers get too little water, this endangers your harvest.

A cucumber plant needs twelve liters of water per kilogram of harvested cucumber.

When it is dry, you should of course use the watering can extensively, but also as soon as the first fruits form.

    Water the root balls

    daily with stale, temperate water

    .

This also prevents the cucumbers from tasting bitter.

Incidentally, the best time for this is in the morning, then the moisture has enough time to evaporate and mildew doesn't stand a chance.

Moisture also attracts snails, which they then have to evict with difficulty.
