A walk through the shelves of Aldi, Rewe and Co. shows: Everything is more expensive again.

Here's what you should know about rising food prices.

Kassel – Everything is getting more expensive at the moment: Energy costs are rising significantly, petrol and diesel are becoming more and more expensive and groceries are also a lot more expensive.

This is partly due to the Ukraine conflict and rising inflation – which is now at almost eight percent.

How much have the prices at supermarkets like Edeka and Rewe and discounters like Aldi and really increased?

Which foods have become the most expensive?

And are there any other ways to save?

Aldi, Lidl, Rewe: Rising prices – food of all kinds is currently becoming more expensive

If you compare the prices for food in May 2022 with those of May last year, according to information from the Federal Statistical Office, an average increase of 11.1 percent can be determined.

This is especially frightening when you take a look at the development between 2000 and 2019: During this period, the average price increase was just 1.5 percent.

Even more worryingly, energy prices are up 38.3 percent (as of June 14).

In order to still save money when shopping in the supermarket, it is worth comparing special and weekly offers.

Some supermarkets and discounters also offer coupons that can be used to save on shopping.

The consumer center also points out that foods that are in season are usually cheaper.

It can also be worthwhile to go shopping according to a weekly schedule - this reduces expensive spontaneous purchases.

By the way, there is currently no need to worry about a shortage of bread and grain products.

Although Russia and Ukraine are important wheat producers, Germany itself ranks second among the largest grain producers in the EU – behind France.

Hamster purchases are therefore not necessary, according to the consumer advice center.

As for oil, refined rapeseed oil or olive oil should be used for frying - no shortages would be expected.
