The subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 of the omicron variant of the coronavirus are currently the dominant ones.
Moderna is currently working on a new booster that should protect against both.
Moderna is currently developing another booster vaccine against the coronavirus.
This seems to work against the currently dominant and rapidly spreading omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5.
The company recently announced this.
The bivalent vaccine is expected to be approved in autumn and be available from then.
Bivalent in general means that a vaccine is designed to immunize against two pathogens.
The new Moderna vaccine should therefore not only protect against a total of 32 mutations of omicron, but also against the original coronavirus strain.
Moderna's results have so far only been announced in a press release.
The complete data are not yet available for external scientists to examine.
New Moderna Booster offers fivefold protection against BA.4 and BA.5
According to the company, late-stage results of the study found that the new vaccine induced an approximately five-fold increase in antibodies
to BA.4 and BA.5
in previously vaccinated and infected individuals .
However, the vaccination did not generate as many antibodies as against the original omicron variant - in comparison, these were about three times lower than against the BA.1 variant.

BA.4 and BA.5 are on the rise, and experts fear the subvariants could bypass immunity and
cause more reinfections
.
Germany, too, must therefore probably consider a fourth corona vaccination.
According to Professor Franz-Xaver Reichl from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU), the fourth vaccination will not yet be an option for the general public.
