Dietitian Shani Arad on choosing quality olive oil (Yad Mordechai)
Olive oil is a prominent ingredient in the Mediterranean diet.
How can you choose quality olive oil?
Dietitian Shani Arad explains.
The Mediterranean diet is recommended by a variety of health organizations around the world and the olive oil stars in it.
When you go to buy olive oil, buy extra virgin olive oil.
It will appear right in front of the product.
This oil has a maximum acidity of 0.8% and is produced by cold pressing.
This means that the oil has not been heated in the production process and has not undergone chemical processes, as refined oil, for example.
Therefore the recommendation is to switch to cooking and baking, and if you already fry then it should be lightly fried and in olive oil, as its smoking point is higher than you think.
What is a smoking point?
This is basically the temperature at which the oil is burned.
Not that it is on fire, but that is the point where the nutritional values of olive oil begin to be harmed.
This is why it is possible to cook, wig and fry with olive oil even at high temperatures.
Another benefit: Olive oil is rich in antioxidants that protect the body's cells, especially vitamin E. And this is very important.
