Martin Gore and David Gahan, the two remaining founding members of Depeche Mode, have revealed the cause of the death of their bandmate Andy Fletcher.
Fletcher's family asked them to do so, they wrote in a message on Depeche Mode's official Instagram account.
"Andy suffered an aortic dissection at his home on May 26," reads the message, which is based on a medical report.
An aortic dissection is usually caused by a tear in the inner lining of the aorta, which causes bleeding between the layers of the wall of the aorta.
"Even though it was much, much too early, he died of natural causes and without prolonged suffering," Gore and Gahan write.
The two musicians thanked them for the "wave of love for Andy" that they have seen from Depeche Mode fans over the past few weeks.
It's incredible to see all the photos, read the sentences and realize how much Andy Fletcher meant to everyone.
It's been a weird, sad, confusing few weeks for the band, "to say the least.
But we saw and felt your love and support, and we know Andy's family felt the same way.”
Friends and family said goodbye to Andy Fletcher in London last week.
"It was a beautiful ceremony with some tears shed," write Gahan and Gore.
However, the funeral service was filled with "great memories of who Andy was, stories of times together and some laughter".
Patsy Kensit had already reported on Instagram about the celebration in Fletcher's honor.
The actress and singer (Eighth Wonder) is a friend of Andy Fletcher's widow, Grainne.
Dave Gahan and Martin Gore conclude their message by saying thank you for all the love shown to Fletcher, his family and friends over the past few weeks.
"It really means the world to us," the two musicians write: "Andy, you will be missed, but certainly not forgotten."
