Climate change: regions sheltered from fires so far soon exposed, according to INRAe researchers

Inexorable, global warming catches up every day with areas and territories that we imagined to be sheltered.

Until the day when… According to French researchers from the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (Inrae), climate change should cause fires in regions hitherto “immune”, and whose vegetation is less able to regenerate than in the Mediterranean areas, which are usually affected.

“What we see in our research is that global warming has three consequences, the first is a spatial extension of the risk zone, with contamination of regions that were historically immune”, against fires, underlined Renaud Barbero, climatologist researcher at Inrae, during a press briefing.

The projections, based on analyzes by UN climate experts (IPCC), show "that the risk zone will extend towards northern Europe, and then at altitude", for its part noted Jean-Luc Dupuy who studies the spread of fires and their evolution in Europe at the Inrae research laboratory in Avignon.

"The danger will also increase in the northern half"

Today, the area burned each year in Europe is on average 400,000 to 500,000 hectares, mainly in the Mediterranean countries (Spain, Greece, Italy, France etc.), which have long been accustomed to these fires during the summer. .

In France, “the activity (of the fires) will intensify in the areas where it is already strong, in the South-East and also extend to the mountainous margins of this southern region”, where the temperatures and the drought will increase, gave Jean-Luc Dupuy as an example.

"The weather danger will also increase in the northern half, particularly in the Pays de la Loire and the Center where we will see a significant increase in fires in the future, according to our projections," he added.

In the United States, where burned areas have increased by 1,200% over the past three to four decades, fires are also occurring more in high altitude areas, which were hitherto spared, noted Renaud Barbero.
