If you want to have beautiful flowers in your garden next year, you can start looking for seeds now.

Munich – you can buy expensive flowers or flower seeds in specialist shops, or simply collect them yourself in a timely manner!

All you need is a suitable flower bed, pruning shears and envelopes or paper bags.

Faded flower heads on your plants don't look particularly pretty, but can be even more helpful if you remove the remaining seeds from them.

You can then scatter the new seeds in another part of the garden or use them as seeds for future houseplants.

You should note that:

  • The seeds must be ripe and completely dry before collection.

So do not collect the seeds after a thunderstorm, but preferably in the afternoon when the sun has been shining on the plant for a while.

  • In the case of corn poppies, you should immediately collect the entire infructescence, but only when most of the flowers on the plant have already faded.

The seeds are then inside the infructescence.

Either turn off the whole flower or remove it with secateurs.

You can also gently crush the flower between your fingers so that the seeds come out.

Then just put them in the envelope.

  • When it comes to sun hats, you definitely have to use pruning shears, because the robust heads can only be twisted off with great effort.

  • Asteraceae, such as cosmos, which carry their seeds on the outside, usually have only 10 to 15 seeds.

  • Amaranth, also known as foxtail, has the most seeds.

Thousands of seeds can be obtained with little effort.

  • Be sure to label the envelopes with a marker.

Collecting hybrid plants is a bit more difficult, as they usually do not flower well the next year.

The collected seeds make an excellent gift for anyone with an affinity for gardening.

The following always applies: Do not harvest the seeds too early, otherwise this will affect flowering.
