Instagram, the Meta-owned social network, has activated a new method of identity verification for subscribers in the United States, which uses Artificial Intelligence.
This will be used to verify the age of users and prevent minors from coming into contact with unsuitable or prohibited content.
In fact, it is not uncommon that, in order not to incur limits, many children change their date of birth after enrollment, pretending to be over 13 or of age.
To reduce this scenario, the AI system adopted by Meta will come into play just when a user, in the profile settings, changes the age, originally set below 18 years, to insert a higher one.
At that point, the social network will ask you to verify it using one of the three options: upload your identity document,
"We are testing this method to make sure that teens and adults have the right experience for their age group," they explain from Meta.
"We partner with Yoti, a company specializing in online age verification, to ensure people's privacy."
According to The Verge website, Yoti's technology is less accurate for women and people with dark skin.
Furthermore, for children under 24, the estimates could be less than 2.5 years.
A 2020 analysis of Yoti's system by a third-party nonprofit nonetheless found 98.89% confidence in a global test for people under 18 or over or under 25.
In addition to testing the new menu of options to verify people's ages, Instagram also uses Artificial Intelligence to distinguish between teens and adults.
"AI helps us to prevent teens from accessing Facebook Dating, adults from texting minors and children from receiving only limited advertising content - continues the group - Our goal is to expand the use of this technology more broad on all our services ".
