Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving has announced that he will stay for another season with the NBA franchise.
The player had two days to exercise the option, which grants him a $ 37 million (€ 35 million) contract for a fourth year in the ranks of the Nets.
"Normal people move the world forward, but those who dare to be different guide us into tomorrow. I have decided to exercise the option. See you in the fall," Irving told The Athletic.
Arriving in 2019 from the Boston Celtics, Irving (30) has never been able to shine with the Nets.
The American, who has averaged 27.1 points and 6 assists per game for three seasons, has only played 103 matches with Brooklyn, due to various injuries and his refusal to get vaccinated against Covid-19.
The health protocol in force in New York until last March prohibited unvaccinated people from entering the gym.
Qualified for the play-offs this season, the Nets were overwhelmed by the Boston Celtics 4-0 in the first round.
Irving's decision could affect the future of the team's other star, Kevin Durant, who wanted to wait for his teammate before deciding whether to stay in Brooklyn.
