A dead 75-year-old woman found in Obernkirchen, Lower Saxony, was the victim of a violent crime.
A spokesman for the public prosecutor's office in Bückeburg told the dpa news agency that a murder was being investigated on the basis of the evidence on site.
The woman's body is currently being autopsied.
The elderly woman was found dead in her stationery shop on Monday.
According to the spokesman, the shop was open in the morning.
It is the second murder in the region in a short period of time.
Manhunt for suspected ax murderer continues
In the area between Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, there is also a search for a 36-year-old man who is said to have killed his ex-girlfriend's lover with an ax in Kalletal.
The place is about 20 kilometers away from Obernkirchen.
The spokesman said it was being checked whether the suspected ax murderer who was wanted could have been involved in the crime in Obernkirchen.
“But there are currently no indications of this.” Investigations are being carried out in all directions, and a motive in the personal sphere is also conceivable.
The public prosecutor's office initially did not provide any information as to whether anything was stolen in the stationery shop.
Connection to fire in neighborhood under investigation
According to the police, a possible connection to a fire in the immediate vicinity of the shop in downtown Obernkirch on Tuesday night is also taken into account in the investigation.
Whether there is a connection is currently unclear.
The investigators called on witnesses in a message to report suspicious observations to the Nienburg/Schaumburg police.
