Iris Cole interviews Prof. Ribi Tauman on sleep disorders - Causes and treatment (Walla system)
Sleep is one of the most important actions for our health in both the short and long term.
Sleep disorders, on the other hand, can cause problems such as weakening our immune system, disrupting our abilities on the physical, cognitive and mental planes, developing tumors or pre-diabetes, memory difficulties, fatigue, frequent mood swings - and the list goes on.
There is no substitute for a sufficient number of hours of sleep, an action that should fill at least a third of our lives, while the quality of sleep also plays a role.
The problem is that there is no small gap between what is available and what is desired in the field.
It causes many Israelis to experience this or that sleep disorder and do not know how to deal with it.

A survey conducted in March 2022 - by the Roshink Research Institute in collaboration with the Katz pharmaceutical company, which manufactures a product for the treatment of temporary sleep disorders - shows some important insights, which indicate one thing: Many Israelis have sleep difficulties that are important to recognize and treat.
The good news is that good sleep is not really a dream, but a reality that can be fulfilled in a simple way.
The survey involved 879 respondents, in the age range of 64-18, who were asked about their sleeping habits and the disorders they suffer from.

Half of Israelis experience sleep problems
The survey indicated that no less than half of Israelis suffer from a sleep disorder.
The frequency of the disorders is certainly high, with about a third of the respondents reporting a sleep disorder almost every night, which impairs their daily conduct.
About one-fifth of Israelis sleep a maximum of five hours every night, mostly men and women from the age of 30.
Relatively high rates of sleep disorders have been identified among people belonging to age groups 64-50, women and residents of the center.
It seems that the income level may also have an effect, as evidenced by the fact that higher rates of functional difficulties due to sleep disorders have been identified in people with relatively low incomes, compared to academics.
A high rate of disruption was detected among people who did not work at the time of the survey compared to working people.

Why do we not sleep?
After realizing that many Israelis simply do not get enough sleep, the question arises what are the main reasons for this.
The survey shows that the main difficulty in falling asleep is due to mental factors (about 70% of the respondents), and more specifically: thoughts (26%), worries (23%), health (12%) and stressful situations (12%).
The survey showed that the worries that overwhelm Israelis and make it difficult for them to sleep are mainly related to their personal situation.
We care mainly about health, family, work and career issues, home economics and relationships.
While the security situation worries some of the respondents, it is far behind, at the end of the list, after those individual factors.
what can we do?
Even if sleep disorders are a common condition, which can be caused due to various and varied factors, the biggest mistake that can be made is to treat it as natural or self-evident, given the effective solutions currently offered to the problem.
First, it is advisable to make every effort to create a healthy sleeping routine and make sure to try to get enough hours of sleep every night.
It is advisable to align with the recommendations of the American Sleep Association for different ages, which recommend a minimum of 9-7 hours of sleep from the age of 18 and 8-7 hours of sleep from the age of 65 onwards.
In order to sleep better, it is highly recommended to strive for sleeping and waking times * all year * to be more or less at the same times.
In addition, it is recommended not to sleep with a TV or screens.
Another tip to adopt is to give a "sleeping corridor" - the preparation should be to downshift, which for most of us means to say goodbye to the screens, especially from work and any communication through the screens, some time before going to bed.
Exercise should also be completed 3 hours before going to bed.
