(ANSA) - GENEVA, June 28 - Over 306,000 civilians have been killed in Syria in ten years of conflict, from 2011 to 2021, according to the latest estimates by the United Nations Office for Human Rights.

This is the highest estimate of civilian deaths caused by the war in Syria, the UN underlined in a statement published today in Geneva.

Following a rigorous statistical evaluation and analysis of available data on civilian casualties, an Onustima report that 306,887 civilians were killed in Syria between 1st March 2011 and 31st March 2021. The figure relates only to people killed as a direct result of Guerrae "does not include the many and many other civilians who died as a result of the loss of access to health care, food, clean water and other essential human rights", underlined United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet .

The estimate of 306,887 means that on average, every single day for the past 10 years, 83 civilians have suffered fatal deaths from the conflict, the report notes.

Furthermore, the extent of "civilian casualties over the past 10 years represents 1.5% of the total population at the beginning of the conflict and raises serious concerns about the failure of the parties to comply with the norms of international humanitarian law on the protection of civilians".

"The casualty figures linked to the conflict in this report are not simply a set of abstract numbers, but they represent individual human beings," commented Michelle Bachelet.
