Garages are there for cars, and this is also controlled by the regulatory office.

In the event of misuse, there are hefty penalties – from fines to demolition.

Whether party room, office or clothes store: garages have always been used not only for cars.

But strictly speaking, this is already

misappropriation

.

The use of garages is regulated by state law, in most federal states by the so-called Garage Ordinance (GaVo).

And this envisages garages merely as a shelter for motor vehicles, usually cars.

Everything else is subject to approval.

A classic car can already be too much.

Many people don't use their garage for their car, but for storage.

But not everything can be stored in it.

What can the garage be used for?

Whether rented or owned - the following things may be stored in the garage:

  • Car (usually has to be registered and roadworthy)

  • Motorbikes are tolerated if a car can be parked without any problems

  • Consumables such as antifreeze, window cleaner or oil

  • Gasoline / diesel in limited quantities (caution, regulations on maximum quantities and type of storage apply here)

  • Car accessories such as tires, roof racks, roof boxes, jacks, etc.

Bicycles

are allowed unless expressly prohibited by the landlord.

In certain cases, a garage can also be used as a

workshop

– and it doesn’t even have to have anything to do with the car.

"It is always crucial that the garage can be used by car without a lot of cleaning up," says the ADAC.

For all other purposes a building permit must be obtained.

Not everything should be stored in the attic either.

A fine is imminent: What may not be stored in the garage - and how high is the penalty?

According to the garage ordinance, it is

forbidden to use garages as storage or storage rooms

.

That would be

misappropriation

.

All things that have nothing to do with the car (see above) must not be parked permanently in the car garage.

This includes, for example, the grill or garden furniture, but also

unregistered classic cars

can become a problem.

"For safety reasons, storing

gas grills

gas cylinders

 and dangerous, explosive and

 flammable substances

is also taboo, " says ADAC.

What are the penalties if the garage is misused?

You should also adhere to these regulations, because the regulatory authorities check whether someone is misusing their garage.

The reason: Parking spaces are scarce in many cities, and these should not be further reduced.

If you get caught, you don't just have to clear out the garage.

The penalties range from hefty

fines of up to 500 euros

to termination of the garage for tenants.

Even a demolition ordinance can be imposed on owners, informs

.

By the way, certain regulations also apply to other activities around the house.

Anyone who does not comply with certain rules, for example when barbecuing on the balcony or in the garden, can expect hefty fines of up to 5,000 euros.

But also cutting hedges or felling trees can be really expensive.
