A huge brawl broke out on a cruise ship as it returned to New York City, prompting the U.S. Coast Guard to escort the ship back to the dock and New York police to open an investigation.

The commotion began at the Carnival Magic nightclub nightclub around 5:20 a.m. Tuesday, the last night of the ship's eight-day Caribbean cruise with stops in the Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas.

The video of the brawl shows a chaotic scene, with dozens of passengers pounding and pushing each other, while the ship's security guards try in vain to separate the fight.

Some of the passengers were injured by pieces of glass

The brawl began as a confrontation between two passengers on the dance floor, and police officers who arrived at the scene say it expanded into a brawl involving between 40 and 60 passengers, according to the American news site PIX11, no serious injuries were reported.

A witness named @ nyeem0 tweeted that he was' sitting at a bar listening to his music while sipping a drink 'Shirley Temple', and then the brawl broke out of nowhere! " Went down to the club to bring order to the commotion.

The witness added: "It was the last night of the cruise, so I guess they wanted to celebrate properly but get a ban on sailing for life instead, it's wild lol."

The Coast Guard was called to escort the ship

The brawl occurred as the ship approached the port of New York, but it is unclear if it was in New York, New Jersey, or in international waters during the turmoil, making the issue of criminal jurisdiction dull.

No arrests were reported after the brawl, and it is unclear which U.S. security agency will lead the investigation.

Following the battle, cruise line officials notified the Coast Guard of the incident, while the latter sent a boat from Staten Island to escort the ship to dock in Manhattan, according to WNBC-TV.

"The ship arrived as planned this morning and law enforcement authorities on the beach have been notified and boarded the ship to interview suspects and witnesses and conduct an investigation," the carnival company said in a statement.

Police said the passengers gradually got off without incident.

According to the CruiseMapper website, the ship has already left New York for another eight-day cruise in the Caribbean.
