For many, summer and barbecuing belong together.
If you want to grill on the balcony of a rented apartment, you should follow a few rules to avoid trouble.
Kassel – summer time is barbecue time.
In the park, in the garden, on the balcony - many people like to unpack the grill everywhere to grill delicious sausages, meat, cheese or vegetables.
But beware: When barbecuing on the balcony, certain rules must be observed, otherwise there is a risk of an administrative offence.
Barbecue on the balcony: If you are not considerate, you risk being fired
In principle, barbecuing on the balcony of rented apartments is permitted - provided there is no risk of smoke or sparks entering the neighbors' apartments.
According to the catalog of fines, mutual consideration is paramount: if a neighbor is bothered by noise, smell or smoke, this can have consequences for the griller.
It's also worth taking a look at the rental agreement before you fire up the grill.
In some rental contracts, barbecuing on the balcony is expressly forbidden.
If you grill anyway, you risk being fired in the worst case, as reported by HNA.de.

Gas, electric or charcoal: can I use any grill when grilling on the balcony?
Yes, the grill on the balcony can also be fired with charcoal.
However, the risk of smoke pollution for the neighbors is greater than with an electric grill, for example.
If the smoke pollution is too high, the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) is violated - there is a risk of a fine.
Since the smoke development from gas and electric grills is significantly lower than from charcoal grills, complaints are less common according to the catalog of fines.
Federal State | Warning money for wild grilling |
---|---|
Hesse | 120 euros |
Lower Saxony | Usually no warning money |
North Rhine-Westphalia | 5 to 50 euros (depending on the region) |
Saxony | 5 euros |
Baden-Wuerttemberg | 50 Euros |
Whether in spring, summer, autumn or winter: how often the grill can be fired up on the balcony varies from judge to judge.
In the past, for example, a judge at the Aachen district court ruled that barbecues may be held twice a month, while the Oldenburg district court ruled that barbecue evenings may only take place four times a year and up to a maximum of midnight.
