Body odor does not only play an important role in romantic relationships.

Researchers found that even close friends can smell each other well.

Munich – When two people love each other, they can usually smell each other well.

Apparently, this phenomenon does not only apply to people in love.

Close friends also have a similar body scent, a study from Israel has now revealed.

In one experiment, the researchers were even able to use body odor to predict which two unknown participants would ultimately harmonize well.

For the study published in the journal Science Advances, the scientists working with Prof. Noam Sobel from the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot focused on non-romantic relationships between two partners of the same sex.

The researchers suspected that similarities in body odor play a role in friendships, just as they do in lovers.

They examined their thesis based on “click friendships”: 20 pairs of friends who had sparked platonic sparks right after they first met took part in the experiment.

The research group used an electronic nose to analyze the smell of worn T-shirts with the 40 test persons' own body odor for various chemical components.

This resulted in odor profiles of the study participants, which were then compared with each other.

The body odors of a pair of friends were more similar than randomly selected odor samples.

This was also confirmed by an experiment with people who smelled the samples and were supposed to judge them according to certain criteria.

Experiment confirms: people with similar body odor harmonize better

To find out whether body odor brings people together or is similar, for example because close friends eat similar foods or live in the same area, the scientists conducted another experiment.

17 test subjects who did not know each other also gave an odor sample of themselves, which was analyzed by the electronic nose.

Then the participants, in different pairs, completed a game by standing opposite each other like a mirror image and imitating their gestures.

Not a word was spoken to each other.

At the end, the subjects were asked to report whether there was a connection or a click with their partner.

The result showed that partners with a similar odor profile also played well together on the task and harmonized with each other.

Ultimately, the scientists even managed to use a model they created to predict which players will click based on their scent profile and the two will feel connected.
