Rival family gangs continue to cause unrest in Essen: after a mass brawl involving 400 participants in the Altendorf district at the weekend, the police moved out again on Wednesday night.

After a tip about masked people, the personal details of eleven men were found at Borbecker Platz in the north-west of the city, who, according to the police, "all without exception could be assigned to an extended Arab family".

Two live pistols and ammunition were found in a car attributed to the group.

The pistols were "ready for action."

As a police spokesman told the dpa news agency, all eleven men were let go after they had been given places;

the weapons could not be specifically assigned to anyone.

The dispute between two clans has occupied the police for the fifth day in a row.

A man was seriously injured in a mass brawl on Saturday.

A mass brawl broke out on Sunday.

Four suspects were discovered with guns in a car on Monday.

On Tuesday evening, the police said they were informed that the two families involved had called in a so-called "magistrate of the peace" to resolve the conflict.

The special unit for clans of the Essen police and the public prosecutor's office are now investigating dangerous and simple bodily harm, serious breaches of the peace and violations of the weapons law.

"The investigations, which also aim to shed light on the background to the conflict, are ongoing."
