This is a sign with a clear message.

A Rewe customer came across the message on the drinks shelf and celebrated it with a photo on Twitter.

Munich – The selection in an assortment is the be-all and end-all in every supermarket.

Rewe probably doesn't make a difference - even with drinks.

The customer is known to be king.

But a Rewe supermarket is providing clarity with a sign on the subject of energy drinks.

These soft drinks with the "extra boost" such as Red Bull, Monsters or Rockstar are particularly popular with young people.

Many drink the energy drinks to become more alert and fit.

There is no official age limit or ban on sales to minors, although consumer advocates and doctors are demanding this to protect children.

The combination of caffeine with other ingredients in energy drinks can be dangerous for the heart, doctors have feared for a long time.

Excessive consumption is particularly critical, doctors warn.

Because often it doesn't just stay with a can.

Rewe market recommends milk instead of energy drinks

A Rewe branch is obviously bothered by this and so a sign is emblazoned on the drinks shelf.

It says: "We only have energy drinks from the age of 16." But the Rewe team couldn't resist a humorous dig: "Until then...we recommend milk!"

A Twitter user took a snap of the sign.

"Hey.

I think it's good," he comments on the photo and the action.

Unfortunately, it is initially unclear whether the user himself is affected by the age restriction.

It is not the first Rewe branch to position itself clearly on the subject of energy drinks.

A photo with the sale notice appeared on social media last year.

At that time, the ban on sales up to the age of 16 caused controversial discussions.

It wouldn't be the biggest problem with youngsters drinking Red Bull or Monsters.

There were also doubts about its effectiveness.

"They send their adult friends off and they don't buy e-drinks, but alcohol and cigarettes," wrote one user.

In fact, it is perhaps more of a successful PR coup.

Yes, even people over the age of 16 should think about the health risks of energy drinks.

A can with 250 milliliters contains 80 milligrams of caffeine, about as much as a cup of coffee - can be read on the website of the consumer center.

That sounds harmless at first.

However, if several energy drinks are drunk in a row, undesirable effects can occur.

In addition to the dose and the combination with alcohol or physical exertion, (unknown) previous damage to the cardiovascular system can also play a role.

Nervousness, insomnia, sweating, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias and circulatory collapse - the consumer advice center lists them.

For comparison: an espresso contains 50 to 60 milligrams of caffeine.

A Rewe customer expressed her criticism of the supermarket's food delivery online and immediately suggested a solution.
